Santa Rosa de Copán is the capital of the Copán Department, set in the highlands of western Honduras at more than a thousand metres above sea level. Its historic centre follows a Spanish colonial grid, with a central park, a cathedral and blocks of low buildings. The grid holds together on the map even as the ground rises and falls beneath it.
The town grew in colonial times as a centre of tobacco growing, and a cigar factory still operates here. Coffee is now just as important, and farms cover much of the surrounding hills. This history shows in the map's layout, with a dense, regular centre, roads running out to the countryside and villages scattered across the higher ground.
