Santiago de Cuba occupies the slopes around a sheltered bay on the southeastern coast of Cuba, and its map is all about the meeting of water and hills. The narrow bay opens to the Caribbean through a slender channel guarded by the Castillo del Morro. The old town climbs steeply from the waterfront in a grid of short blocks, and the mountains of the Sierra Maestra close the view to the west.
Founded in 1515 by Diego Velázquez, the city was Cuba's first capital and remains its second largest. It is closely tied to the island's political history: the attack on the Moncada Barracks in 1953 marked the start of the revolution. The Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca, better known as El Morro, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site overlooking the harbour entrance.
