Senador Pompeu lies in the central sertão of Ceará, in the dry interior of north-eastern Brazil. The town has a regular grid of streets around a central square and church. On the map the grid sits in open country where low hills, seasonal streams and scattered farms fill the land around it. Nearby, the Patu reservoir holds water in a landscape that is dry for much of the year.
The town carries a hard memory from the great drought of 1932, when people fleeing the drought were held in a camp here. Each year a pilgrimage walk, the Caminhada da Seca, commemorates those who suffered. That history gives Senador Pompeu a particular place in the story of the sertão and of Ceará as a whole.
