Sitten, known in French as Sion, is the capital of the Swiss canton of Valais. It lies on the floor of the Rhône valley, where the river flows past on the south side of the town and steep mountain slopes rise on either side. From above, the map shows a compact old town pressed against two rocky hills.
The hills, Valère and Tourbillon, are the city's defining landmarks. Valère carries a fortified basilica that houses one of the oldest playable organs in the world, and Tourbillon holds the ruins of a medieval castle. Around the town, vineyards climb the sunny slopes of the valley, marked on the map by winding terrace roads.

The Rhône valley
The river runs along the southern edge of the city, straight and broad. It sets the direction of the valley and gives the print a strong horizontal line.
Vineyard slopes
On the hillsides around the city, vineyards are reached by roads that zigzag up the terraces. These fine, looping lines add texture to the edges of the map.
