Šolta lies off the Dalmatian coast just west of Brač and southwest of Split, from where ferries cross in about an hour. It is a narrow island running roughly east to west, with a gentle interior of fields and olive groves. On a map it looks like a slim leaf set in the sea. Neighbouring islands and the mainland lie close enough to show at the edges.
Most of the villages sit either in the interior or in the deep coves of the northern coast. Grohote, the largest settlement, lies inland. Rogač, Nečujam and Stomorska occupy bays along the north side, and Maslinica sits at the western end among a scatter of small islets. The southern coast is steeper and more exposed, and roads barely reach it.
Šolta is known for its olive oil, honey and wine, and for a quiet pace that sets it apart from busier islands nearby. A Šolta map poster traces this balance. At the western end, a cluster of small islands lies off the village of Maslinica. They break the outline into scattered shapes where the island meets the sea.
Inland Grohote
The largest village sits inside the island rather than on the coast. It is a compact cluster of streets with roads running down to the harbours.
