Suruç lies in the south of Şanlıurfa province, on the flat, irrigated plain that stretches toward the Syrian frontier. From above there is little relief to interrupt the plan: the town forms a compact block of streets, and around it the land is divided into large, regular fields crossed by straight farm roads and irrigation lines. Kobani lies just to the south, across the border.
This is one of the oldest farmed landscapes in the world, and in recent decades water from the Southeastern Anatolia Project has turned much of the surrounding plain into cotton and cereal land. The town serves as the market centre for the nearby villages, and in 2014 it took in many people fleeing the fighting across the border in Kobani.
