Sūsangerd lies in Khuzestan Province in southwestern Iran, on the Karkheh river, in the flat lowlands west of Ahvaz. From above, the town follows the course of the river, with streets arranged on both sides and bridges linking the two halves. The land around is level and agricultural, with irrigation channels drawn across the fields.
To the west, the plain extends toward the Hawizeh marshes and the border with Iraq. The town has a largely Arab population and a character shaped by the river and the wider lowland region. During the Iran–Iraq war, the area around Sūsangerd was close to the front line and saw heavy fighting.
