This Suzhou is not the famous garden city in Jiangsu but a prefecture-level city in the north of Anhui province, near the borders of Jiangsu, Shandong and Henan. Its map is shaped by the flat, open Huaibei plain. Roads can run straight for long distances, and with no mountains or coastline to contain it, the city spreads outward freely.
The central districts show a mostly regular pattern of broad avenues and large blocks, and newer development extends in orderly rows. Canals, rivers and drainage channels cross the surrounding farmland in long lines, as they do across much of this farming plain, and railway lines cut through cleanly. Around the city, the countryside appears as open space broken by villages.
The prefecture lies on the route of the ancient Grand Canal, and a section in Sixian County is part of the Grand Canal World Heritage Site.
