Telavi is the main town of Kakheti, Georgia's wine region, built on the lower slopes of the Gombori range above the broad Alazani valley. On a map the streets climb from the valley edge toward the wooded ridge behind, curving along the contours. The flat, cultivated floor of the Alazani stretches away northeast toward the foothills of the Greater Caucasus.
For a time Telavi was the royal seat of the kingdom of Kakheti, and the fortified residence of King Erekle II, Batonis Tsikhe, still stands in the centre. Nearby grows a huge plane tree said to be about nine centuries old. Vineyards and wineries surround the town, and the Alazani valley is among the best-known wine landscapes in the Caucasus.
