Tepic, the capital of Nayarit, lies in an upland valley inland from the Pacific coast of western Mexico. The Sangangüey volcano rises to the south-east, and lower hills surround the rest of the basin. From above, the city looks like a pale patch of streets set into a green, folded landscape, with farmland reaching right to its edges.
The historic centre keeps a regular colonial grid around its main plaza and cathedral, and the blocks get smaller toward the core. The Mololoa River runs along the eastern side of the city. Newer neighbourhoods have spread along its course and out toward the highways leading to Guadalajara and the coast.
Tepic is a regional centre for the Wixárika, or Huichol, people of the nearby sierra, and their beadwork and yarn art are widely seen in the city.
