Tezu Map Poster
Tezu is the headquarters of Lohit district in the far east of Arunachal Pradesh. It lies on a broad, level stretch of land near the Lohit River, with the Mishmi Hills rising sharply to the north and east. On a map the town is a spread of streets and compounds on flat ground. Around it are the braided channels of the river and the steep, empty hills.
The Mishmi people live in the surrounding region. Across India the district is known for Parshuram Kund, a pilgrimage site on the Lohit that draws large crowds around Makar Sankranti each January. Tezu also has a small airport, whose runway appears on the map as a long straight line across the town's otherwise loose street pattern.

Hills rise abruptly at the edge of the plain. There the roads thin out and the map becomes mostly empty, which gives the town a strong sense of setting.
