Tokorozawa lies in southwestern Saitama, on the Musashino plateau just beyond Tokyo's northwestern edge. The land is gently rolling rather than flat, and the map combines dense residential districts around its stations with pockets of farmland and woodland. Seibu railway lines converge at Tokorozawa Station, giving the centre a clear hub from which roads and tracks fan out.
The city holds a notable place in aviation history: Japan's first airfield opened here in 1911. The site is now Tokorozawa Aviation Memorial Park, a large open space in the middle of the city that stands out strongly on the map. To the southwest, the Sayama Hills hold Lake Sayama and Lake Tama, reservoirs that supply Tokyo.
