This Tongchuan is not the better-known industrial city in Shaanxi but a town in central Sichuan, the seat of Santai County in the Mianyang area. It lies in the rolling hill country of the Sichuan Basin, where terraced slopes, reservoirs and small valleys create a crowded, organic landscape. The town grows beside the Fu River, which flows south through the region.
