Tulum lies on the Caribbean coast of Quintana Roo, on the Yucatán Peninsula. From above, the town splits into distinct parts: a compact grid of streets straddling Federal Highway 307 a short distance inland, and a thin strip of small hotels and beach clubs strung along a coastal road that runs south beside the shore. Between them lies low, dense jungle.
North of the beach strip, on a limestone cliff above the sea, stand the ruins of the walled Maya city of Tulum, among the best-known Maya sites on the coast. The surrounding limestone plain is known for its cenotes, water-filled sinkholes linked to long underwater cave systems, and to the south the Sian Ka'an reserve protects a vast area of wetland and forest.
