Ugie is a small town in the north-eastern Eastern Cape, in the high country below the southern Drakensberg. It was founded in the nineteenth century as a mission settlement and takes its name from a river in Scotland. The town is laid out in a simple grid, which appears on the map as a neat block of streets set in wide open land.
The surrounding landscape is a mix of highland grassland, farms and extensive timber plantations, which have played an important role in the local economy. Streams run down from the higher ground, and the roads leaving town head toward nearby Maclear and other settlements in the region.
