Ventersdorp is an agricultural town in South Africa's North West province, west of Johannesburg, on the road towards Lichtenburg. It was founded in the second half of the nineteenth century and named after the Venter family, who owned the farm the town grew on. Around it lies the flat, open Highveld, used mostly for maize and cattle.
The map shows a textbook South African platteland layout. The old town is a neat rectangular grid of long blocks, and the main streets are wide enough to have once turned an ox wagon. Newer residential areas sit a little apart from the original grid. The long straight roads leaving town cross farmland with very few interruptions.
