Viljoenskroon is a small town in the northern Free State, in maize country a short way south of the Vaal River. Like many towns on the South African highveld, it was laid out with a regular grid of wide streets and square blocks. From above the pattern is crisp and easy to read, surrounded by the large rectangular fields of commercial farms.
The township of Rammulotsi lies beside the town. It is a legacy of apartheid-era planning, and it has grown to hold most of the local population. On a map its denser, finer street pattern sits next to the older grid, and the gap between them is still visible, a physical record of how the town was divided.
