Visingsö Map Poster
Visingsö lies in the southern part of Lake Vättern, a short ferry crossing from Gränna on the eastern shore. It is long and slender, roughly fourteen kilometres from end to end but only a few wide, and on a map it runs almost parallel to the lake's own north to south axis, a thin island inside a long lake.
In the Middle Ages it was a seat of Swedish kings, and the ruins of Näs castle stand at the island's southern tip. Later the Brahe family built Visingsborg near the harbour, now also a ruin. In the nineteenth century the Swedish state planted a large oak forest here to supply timber for naval ships, and it still covers much of the island.
A Visingsö map poster shows a calm, rural drawing: a network of straight country roads, the forest in the middle, the ferry harbour on the east coast and the smooth lake shoreline all around. The water frames it widely on every side, which only emphasises how slender the island really is.

At the southern tip stand the remains of a medieval royal castle, marking the point where the island narrows and ends in the open lake.

The harbour on the east coast connects the island with Gränna, and the short crossing reads as a clear channel between the island and the lakeshore.
