Wadern lies in the north of Saarland, where the land rises toward the Hunsrück. The municipality is made up of a central town and a number of villages spread across wooded hills and farmland. On a map it looks less like one settlement than a group of small centers connected by winding country roads.
The town center is compact, with a short network of streets around its historic core, and the roads leading out of it follow the valleys rather than the high ground. Open fields and large blocks of forest fill the space between the districts. This gives the map broad areas of calm between clusters of detail.
Near the town stands Schloss Dagstuhl, a baroque manor that now houses the Leibniz Center for Informatics, where computer scientists from around the world come to meet.
