Wesselsbron is a small town in the north-western Free State in South Africa, surrounded by some of the country's most productive maize land. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets on almost flat ground. The main roads leave it in straight lines, and immediately beyond the last houses the landscape becomes a pattern of large rectangular fields.
Like many Free State towns, Wesselsbron has a central church and main street near the middle of its grid, with residential areas spreading around them. The surrounding land is divided by farm roads and boundaries into large, regular plots. In certain seasons the circles of centre-pivot irrigation add round shapes to the rectangular pattern.
