Whittlesea lies in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, south of Komani, formerly Queenstown, in a landscape of rolling grassland and low hills. It began in the mid nineteenth century as a frontier settlement and took its name from Whittlesey in England, the birthplace of the colonial governor Sir Harry Smith. Today it serves as a local centre for the surrounding rural villages.
On the map the town reads as a small, fairly regular core of streets, with a main road passing through and linking it to the wider region. Beyond that core the pattern loosens. Homesteads and villages spread across the open land in clusters, joined by tracks and minor roads, and the terrain decides where settlement gathers and where it thins out.
