Winburg lies in the Free State province of South Africa, on the open grassland of the highveld north-east of Bloemfontein. It is one of the oldest towns in the province, established by Voortrekkers in the 1840s. On a map its centre is a regular grid of streets and blocks, set within a wide, flat landscape of farms and grassland that stretches in every direction.
Winburg played a part in the early history of the region as one of the first seats of Voortrekker government. Just outside the town stands a Voortrekker monument whose five linked columns represent the main trek groups. Today the N5 road passes close by, linking Winburg with towns further east and drawing a long straight line across the map.
