Wombwell is in the metropolitan borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, on the edge of the Dearne Valley. Coal mining shaped the town for more than a century. The map still reflects that period: rows of terraced streets arranged in tight parallel lines, a long high street running through the centre, and railway lines crossing the lower ground.
Since the pits closed, much of the former industrial land around the valley has been reclaimed as green space, and the surroundings look much softer than they once did. Wombwell Wood, an area of ancient woodland, lies on higher ground to the west. The River Dearne runs to the north, and the town has a station on the line between Sheffield and Leeds.
