Xinshi lies in central Hubei, where the Jianghan Plain begins to give way to low hills. It is a local centre for the surrounding countryside, with a denser core of streets and shops surrounded by newer residential districts and, beyond them, farmland. The landscape around it is a mix of level fields, ponds and gentle rises.
