Xinxing lies in the southeast of Gansu, in the hilly loess country of the upper Wei River basin. In this landscape, towns grow along valley floors, because the surrounding slopes are steep and cut by gullies. From above, Xinxing follows that pattern. Its streets fill the flatter ground, and the land around it rises in folds and ridges.
