Yelets Map Poster
Yelets stands on the Bystraya Sosna River in Lipetsk Oblast and is among the older towns of central Russia, first mentioned in the chronicles in 1146. On a map, the river winds through the town in a deep valley. The historic centre sits on the high ground above its bank, and later districts spread out across the plateau beyond.
The centre follows a regular plan of straight streets and rectangular blocks, a legacy of the replanning of many Russian provincial towns in the late eighteenth century. Above it rises the Ascension Cathedral, designed by Konstantin Thon, the architect of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow. Its domes can be seen from far across the valley.
