About this Mtwara map poster
Mtwara lies on the southern coast of Tanzania, near the border with Mozambique, and its map begins with the sea. The town sits beside a sheltered bay, with a creek and mangrove shores on one side and the deep-water harbour on the other. The coastline is broken into inlets and sandbanks, giving the map an irregular edge.
The town itself is loosely spread. Wide roads laid out in the mid-twentieth century run between neighbourhoods with plenty of open space, and trees and gardens fill the gaps between buildings. The main road heads inland toward the rest of the region, and the airport occupies a large open area at the edge of town.
