Lagoon to the west
A large shallow lagoon sits just inland from the town. Its outline forms one of the biggest shapes on the map and balances the straight line of the coast.

The map
Mullaittivu lies on the northeastern coast of Sri Lanka, where a long sandy shoreline faces the Bay of Bengal. From above, water dominates. The open sea runs along one side, and a broad lagoon reaches inland on the other. The town's streets follow the narrow strip of land between them, with roads leading inland across flat country toward the rest of the Northern Province.
The map is sparse, which is part of its character. Instead of a dense grid there are a few main roads and scattered lanes, with wide shapes of water and shoreline around them. The coast here was badly hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, and the district later went through the final phase of the country's civil war. Both events remain part of how the place is remembered.
A Mullaittivu map poster is mostly about edges: where land meets lagoon, where the town meets the sea, and how thin the ground between them can be. In monochrome, the water becomes large calm fields and the town a fine line of streets along the coast. It is a quiet, spacious composition.

A long, smooth stretch of Indian Ocean coast runs past the town. It gives the poster a firm edge along one side of the frame.
Instead of a dense grid, a handful of roads and lanes cross flat land between the waters. The result is an open, uncluttered layout.
