The map
Bad Hersfeld Map Poster & Print
Bad Hersfeld lies in northeastern Hesse, in a wide valley where the Haune River flows into the Fulda. From above, the historic centre is an oval of narrow streets and small squares, still outlined by the course of its medieval walls, with newer districts and the spa gardens spreading along the valley and onto the wooded hills around it.
The town grew around a Benedictine abbey founded in the eighth century. The ruins of its Romanesque church, among the largest of their kind, stand next to the old town and serve each summer as the stage for the Bad Hersfeld Festival. The town also holds the Lullusfest, considered one of Germany's oldest folk festivals, and Konrad Duden once headed its grammar school.
A Bad Hersfeld map poster shows a clear, compact core with two rivers joining close by and roads fanning out through the valley. The oval old town gives the composition a strong centre, while hills and forest frame it on every side.

Abbey ruins
Beside the old town, the large open space of the abbey church ruins and its grounds appears as a distinct block, home to the summer theatre festival.
Two rivers
The Haune joins the Fulda at Bad Hersfeld, so the map shows two river lines converging in the valley below the town.
