The map
Motala Map Poster & Print
Motala lies on the northeastern shore of Lake Vättern in Östergötland, at the point where the river Motala ström flows east out of the lake. The Göta Canal also passes through the town, and its creator, Baltzar von Platen, drew up Motala's town plan in the 1820s. He is buried beside the canal here.
On a map, the huge open water of Vättern fills the western side of the drawing. The planned centre sits close to the shore in a regular grid of blocks, and the river and canal run eastward in parallel toward Lake Boren. Locks, bridges and the old engineering works of Motala Verkstad sit along the waterways.
A Motala map poster captures a town shaped by water and planning. The straight lines of von Platen's grid, the canal's steady course and the river's curves all sit side by side, with the lake shore as a broad, natural edge. It is one of the clearest canal-town layouts in Sweden.

Göta Canal
The canal runs through Motala with locks and bridges along its route, a straight, engineered line that is central to the town's identity.
Von Platen's grid
The central town plan, designed by Baltzar von Platen, is a regular grid of blocks near the lake, easy to recognise in a black-and-white drawing.

Why Motala
A map that means something
Motala means something to anyone who has cycled or boated along the Göta Canal, as well as to people who grew up by Vättern. A map with lake, canal and grid in one frame makes a clear and meaningful print.
Add your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps a summer on the canal or a family name, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. HD files cost $9, and printed posters ship from partners in Europe.
