About this Nairobi map poster
Nairobi began in 1899 as a depot on the Uganda Railway, and its map still reflects that origin. The compact central business district sits in a tight wedge of streets near the railway station, bounded by the Nairobi River to the north and Uhuru Highway to the west. From there, major roads fan outward to the suburbs and neighbouring towns.
To the west and north, leafy districts such as Westlands, Kileleshwa and Karen spread over higher ground with winding roads and large plots, while Karura Forest forms a large wooded space in the north. To the east, the city becomes flatter and denser. To the south lies Nairobi National Park, open grassland directly beside the city.
The name comes from a Maasai phrase meaning a place of cool water. Nairobi is one of very few capitals with a national park inside its boundaries, where wildlife can be seen against the skyline.
