The map
The Yong River winds through Nanning in a series of broad loops, and the city has grown along and inside these bends. On the map, bridges cross the river again and again, and districts sit on both sides of each meander, so the water appears as a flowing ribbon threading through the whole urban area.
Nanning is the capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and is often called the Green City for its tree-lined streets and parks. Nanhu Lake lies close to the centre as a long, calm body of water, while Qingxiu Mountain, a forested hill park, rises on the south bank of the river among newer districts.
The city is one of China's main gateways to Southeast Asia, lying a few hours from the border with Vietnam, and it hosts the annual China–ASEAN Expo. A Nanning map poster shows the older centre on the north bank and the newer districts spreading south, all organised by the curves of the river.

A long, narrow lake near the centre, surrounded by park paths and streets, adding a quiet open space in the middle of the densest neighbourhoods.
A forested hill park on the south bank, its winding trails and green slopes appearing on the map as a soft, irregular shape among the newer city blocks.
