The map
Naqādah is a town in Qena Governorate in Upper Egypt, on the west bank of the Nile a little north of Luxor. The valley here is narrow on the map: a strip of cultivated land along the river, criss-crossed by canals and field boundaries, with the desert beginning abruptly where irrigation ends. The town sits within that strip, its streets dense and irregular.
The name is known far beyond Egypt thanks to archaeology. Excavations at cemeteries near the town in the 1890s gave their name to the Naqada culture, the predynastic civilisation that flourished in the Nile Valley in the fourth millennium BC, before the first pharaohs. Across the river lies Qus, a town with a long history of its own.
A Naqādah map poster suits people from the town and its surrounding villages, as well as students of Egyptology who know the name from their textbooks. The contrast between river, fields and desert edge gives a map that is simple in outline and rich in fine detail.
The river runs along one side of the map, broad and steady. Its gentle curve sets the orientation of the town, the fields and the canals.
Irrigation channels divide the farmland into narrow parcels, creating a fine, almost textile-like pattern of lines around the densely built town.
Where the water ends, the cultivated land stops sharply and open desert begins, a boundary that shows very clearly in black and white.

Why Naqādah
A map of Naqādah links a present-day home town with one of the oldest names in Egyptian archaeology. It works as a personal keepsake and as a quiet reference to the deep past of the Nile Valley.
Add your own title, subtitle and coordinates, and choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand suits the desert setting well. The HD files cost $9 and print cleanly at up to 24×36″.
