The map

About this Natitingou map poster

Natitingou is the capital of the Atakora department in northwestern Benin, set among the hills of the Atakora range, the most rugged terrain in the country. The town follows the valley floor, so the map shows a long, uneven built-up area with streets along the lower ground and roads climbing toward the surrounding ridges.

It is the main base for visiting Pendjari National Park to the north and the Batammariba country around Boukombé, known for the fortified earthen houses called tata somba. The Kota waterfall lies a short drive from town, one of several streams descending from the hills.

A Natitingou map poster reflects the town's setting: a main road through the valley, a centre that thickens around markets and administrative buildings, and lanes that stop where the slopes begin. The hills themselves appear as empty spaces pressing on the street pattern, which gives the drawing a strong sense of place.

01

Valley corridor

The town stretches along a valley of the Atakora hills, with the main road forming its spine and the streets clustering close to it.

02

Hill edges

Where the slopes rise, the street network thins and stops, leaving blank areas that trace the outline of the surrounding ridges.

03

Roads north

Routes leave town toward Tanguiéta and Pendjari, long lines crossing rural country that show why Natitingou became the region's gateway.
