The map

About this Nema Kunku map poster

Nema Kunku is a town in the Western Region of the Gambia, in the Kombo area that surrounds the country's main urban centres near the Atlantic coast. It has grown quickly as people have moved outward from the busier districts, and on the map this growth appears as neighbourhoods of new streets extending between older roads.

The layout is a mixture of planned blocks and informal lanes, with compound plots marking out the land and main roads carrying traffic toward the coast and the larger towns. Open land, gardens and scattered trees still appear between the built-up areas, giving the map a loose, open character.

A Nema Kunku map poster captures a place in the process of forming. The dense lines of new residential streets meet stretches of undeveloped land, and the main roads give the composition a clear structure around which the rest of the town is arranged.
