About this Ninghai map poster
Ninghai is a county in Ningbo, on the coast of Zhejiang province. On a map the county town sits in a basin surrounded by hills, and its street network spreads over the valley floor. Rivers flow from the uplands through the town towards the sea to the east. The land rises quickly to forested ridges on several sides, so the urban area has a clearly defined, roughly enclosed shape.
The town has a special place in Chinese travel culture. The Ming dynasty geographer and traveller Xu Xiake began the first entry of his famous travel diaries here, and China's national Tourism Day, 19 May, marks the date of that entry. The surrounding hills have hot springs and trails.
