Aarsâl lies in the northeast of Lebanon's Beqaa Valley, high on the western flanks of the Anti-Lebanon mountains near the Syrian border. The land is dry and rocky. On a map the town spreads loosely over sloping ground, and its streets follow the natural shape of the uplands.
The surrounding country is largely open and stony, used for orchards, grazing and stone quarrying, which has long been part of the local economy. In recent years the town also received large numbers of refugees from Syria, and settlements grew around its edges.
