Aguadas lies in the north of Caldas, in the coffee-growing mountains of Colombia's Andes. The town is built along a high ridge, and on a map its streets form a long, narrow strip that follows the crest. On either side, the land drops steeply into green valleys, with roads winding down the slopes toward farms and scattered settlements.
Aguadas is known as the ciudad de las brumas, the city of mists, because clouds often cover the ridge. It is also famous for the sombrero aguadeño, a hat woven from palm fibre, and for hosting the national festival of the Colombian pasillo, a traditional musical genre.
