Ridge-top streets
Roads wind along ridges and around valleys, following the lie of the land. From above they form an organic network, far from the rigid grids of Saudi Arabia's lowland cities.

Al Bahah sits in the Sarawat Mountains of southwestern Saudi Arabia at more than 2,000 metres. Its cooler climate makes it a popular summer destination. From above, the city is spread across ridges and valleys, with streets that curve to follow the terrain rather than a fixed grid. Neighbourhoods cluster on level ground, separated by slopes and ravines.
To the west, the land falls away sharply along the escarpment toward the Tihama coastal plain, one of the most dramatic changes of elevation in the Arabian Peninsula. Roads descend in tight switchbacks and tunnels. An Al Bahah map poster shows the contrast between the high plateau city and the deeply cut terrain at its edge.
The region is known for its juniper forests, terraced farmland and historic stone villages with defensive towers, including the marble village of Dhi Ain in the lowlands. Parks such as Raghadan Forest sit on the edge of the escarpment, giving wide views over the mountains. The city is the capital of the Al Bahah Region.
Roads wind along ridges and around valleys, following the lie of the land. From above they form an organic network, far from the rigid grids of Saudi Arabia's lowland cities.
On the city's western side, the land drops steeply toward Tihama. Roads descend in tight bends, and the change in terrain gives the map a strong, dramatic edge.
Juniper woodland and parks such as Raghadan cover slopes around the city, breaking up the built area with irregular patches of green.

For families from Al Bahah, and for visitors who come to escape the summer heat, a map of the city captures its unusual mountain setting in a way few other Saudi cities can. It makes a considered gift for a home in Riyadh, Jeddah or abroad.
