Alta Badia is the upper part of Val Badia in South Tyrol, a Ladin-speaking valley in the heart of the Dolomites. On a map it appears as a string of villages spread along roads and streams in a wide, green valley: Corvara, Colfosco, La Villa, San Cassiano, Badia and La Val. The Sella massif and the pointed Sassongher rise above Corvara at the head of the valley.
Corvara is one of the entry points to the Sella Ronda, the ski circuit that loops around the Sella massif through four valleys. Alta Badia is also known for the Gran Risa, a steep slope above La Villa where a World Cup giant slalom has been held for decades. The valley has a strong tradition of mountain food and cooking as well.
An Alta Badia map poster captures the rhythm of the valley: small village centres, connecting roads, pastures and lifts climbing toward the Campolongo, Gardena and Valparola passes. In a wider frame, the Sella massif becomes a solid mass in one corner. Each village keeps its own compact core, so the map has several quiet focal points instead of one.
Corvara sits at the head of the valley, close to the Sella massif. Its lifts link directly into the Sella Ronda, the best-known ski circuit in the Dolomites.
The steep World Cup slope drops toward La Villa. It is a short but intense line on the map and one of the most respected giant slalom courses on the circuit.
Roads climb out of the valley toward the Campolongo, Gardena and Valparola passes. Their switchbacks are the most sinuous lines on the poster.
