Amreli lies in the Saurashtra peninsula of Gujarat, in gently rolling, mostly agricultural country. From above, the town has a compact centre of narrow lanes, surrounded by newer residential areas laid out on looser, more regular lines. Highways lead out towards Rajkot, Bhavnagar and the coast, dividing the map into clear sectors.
Before Indian independence, Amreli was part of the territory of the Gaekwads of Baroda, which left its mark on the town's administrative buildings and older streets. Today it is the headquarters of Amreli district, and the wider district extends towards the forests where Asiatic lions range, a distinctive feature of this corner of Gujarat.
