Verāval lies on the south-western coast of the Saurashtra peninsula in Gujarat, facing the Arabian Sea. It is one of the largest fishing harbours in India, and from above, breakwaters, jetties and boatyards dominate the waterfront. The dense old town sits close behind the harbour in a tight network of narrow streets and markets.
Wooden fishing boats and dhows have been built here for generations, and the harbour's basins and quays are the most distinctive shapes on the map. Beyond the old centre, newer neighbourhoods spread inland along the main roads, and the coastline continues in a long curve to the south-east.
Somnath, one of the most important Hindu temple sites in India, lies just along the shore at Prabhas Patan. Verāval and Somnath form a continuous stretch of settlement along the coast. A Verāval map poster shows a working port town where the sea shapes everything, from the harbour walls to the pattern of streets behind them.
The large harbour, with its breakwaters and jetties, defines the waterfront as a series of geometric shapes projecting into the sea.
Behind the port, the historic centre forms a dense mass of narrow lanes and markets, the most closely built part of the map.
To the south-east, the shoreline continues toward the Somnath temple at Prabhas Patan, linked to Verāval by a strip of coastal settlement.
