Gondal lies in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, south of Rajkot. On a map the town spreads across a flat plain, with an older core of dense, irregular streets and newer neighbourhoods laid out in more regular patterns around it. Farmland covers the surrounding land.
A small river runs by the town, and some of Gondal's palaces stand along it, including the Riverside Palace. The old centre is home to the Naulakha Palace, with its carved stone façade. Main roads link the town to Rajkot and to the Saurashtra highway network.
