Ko e mape
Āq Qalā lies in Golestan Province in north-eastern Iran, on the Gorgan River north of the provincial capital, Gorgan. From above, the town sits on a wide, flat plain, with the river curving through it and streets extending on both banks. The layout is mostly regular, with long, straight roads and blocks spreading outward into farmland.
The name means white fortress in Turkic. The town is an important centre for the region's Turkmen community, and the plain north of the Gorgan is often called the Turkmen Sahra. Wheat and cotton fields cover much of the land around it, giving the wider map a broad, open texture broken by canals and rural roads.
One of the town's best-known features is a historic brick bridge over the Gorgan River, dating from the Safavid era. An Āq Qalā map poster centres on this meeting of river and town. It shows how the settlement grew around a crossing on the plain, and how its streets still follow that line.
The river winds through the town in a series of curves, dividing it into two parts and giving the map a flowing line across the grid.
The old brick bridge over the Gorgan is a small but notable point on the map, marking the historic crossing around which the town developed.
Around the town, the flat land of the Turkmen Sahra is divided into fields and crossed by straight roads and canals, forming a spacious frame.
