Awara is a city in northern Fukui Prefecture, on the Sea of Japan coast near the border with Ishikawa. The map shows a mix of landscapes: a straight coastline along the sea, the lagoon lake Kitagata-ko on the northern edge, and wide, flat rice fields crossed by roads and small channels between them.
The city is best known for Awara Onsen, a hot-spring resort that developed after hot water was found in the area in the late nineteenth century.
