Ko e mape
Aykhal lies in the northwest of the Sakha Republic in Siberia, just south of the Arctic Circle, in a landscape of taiga, permafrost and rivers that stay frozen for much of the year. The town is compact and planned, with apartment blocks arranged on a small, regular layout. From above, its tidy shape contrasts sharply with the wild terrain around it.
Aykhal was built in the 1960s to serve the diamond deposits discovered nearby, and mining remains the reason it exists. As in other northern Siberian towns, buildings stand on piles to protect the permafrost beneath them. The name comes from a Yakut word usually translated as glory or joy.
An Aykhal map poster records a settlement shaped entirely by its purpose. The residential blocks form a compact core, while mine roads and industrial sites extend outward, and the surrounding forest leaves wide open spaces. It is a stark, unusual composition that holds real meaning for anyone who has lived or worked in this remote part of the North.

Roads lead from the town toward the mining and industrial areas. Their long, purposeful lines dominate much of the map around the settlement.
Beyond the roads, the map opens into taiga crossed by rivers and streams. Few features interrupt this space, which shows how isolated the town is.

Ko e ha Aykhal
Many people spent years in Aykhal on long contracts, or grew up there before moving to Mirny, Yakutsk or western Russia. A map of the town is a way to remember a place that few others will ever see.
