Ballerup lies west of Copenhagen, on one of the corridors defined by the city's Finger Plan. Under that plan, growth follows rail lines outward and green land is kept between them. The map shows the logic clearly. There is a built-up core around the S-train station, residential estates and business areas spread out from it, and open fields and woodland lie beyond.
Much of Ballerup was built in the second half of the twentieth century. It has housing estates, schools, industrial parks and the Ballerup Super Arena, known for indoor track cycling. The street pattern mixes curving estate roads and cul-de-sacs with straighter arterial roads. Wide green buffers and lakes mark the edges of the municipality.
