Bismarck, the capital of North Dakota, sits on the east bank of the Missouri River, with its sister city Mandan across the water. From above, the downtown streets form a tidy grid near the railway, and neighbourhoods spread north and east on higher ground, with newer curving streets at the edges. The river runs along the south-western side of the frame in broad, sweeping curves.
The North Dakota State Capitol stands north of downtown, an Art Deco tower from the 1930s rising above the prairie, often called the Skyscraper of the Prairie. Its long mall and grounds make a clear open shape on the map. The Lewis and Clark expedition passed along this stretch of the Missouri, and the river valley still frames the city's layout today.
A Bismarck map poster balances grid and river. The streets are orderly and easy to read, the Missouri adds a wide, flowing band with its sandbars and bridges, and the Capitol grounds give the composition a clear point of focus. It is the portrait of a plains capital that grew up beside a great river.

The Capitol and its long, open grounds sit north of downtown. On the print the complex forms a calm, spacious area within the surrounding residential streets.
The original town grid lies close to the railway, with evenly spaced blocks that make the densest and most regular part of the city.

Ko e ha Bismarck
Bismarck is a city people are proud of quietly: a capital without pretension, a river at the edge of town and a lot of sky. The map suits a home office, a legislator's wall or a family that has lived on the plains for generations.
