Channagiri lies in Davanagere district in central Karnataka, in the transition zone between the open Deccan plateau and the greener country towards the Western Ghats. The town is compact, with streets branching out from a central area, and the map around it is filled with plantations, fields and the soft outlines of low hills.
The region is known for its areca nut plantations, which cover much of the surrounding land. Within the taluk lies Sulekere, also called Shanti Sagara, a very large tank built centuries ago to store water for the farmland around it, and still a defining feature of the local landscape.
