Chikmagalūr lies in the Malnad region of Karnataka, at the edge of the Western Ghats. The town occupies a gently rising valley, and its street map shows a compact centre with roads fanning out along the contours toward the hills. To the north the Baba Budangiri range climbs steeply, and around the town the countryside is a pattern of plantations, forest and winding estate roads.
The district is known as the birthplace of coffee in India. According to tradition, the Sufi saint Baba Budan brought seven coffee beans from Yemen in the seventeenth century and planted them in these hills, which now carry his name. Mullayanagiri, the highest peak in Karnataka, rises above the town, and the surrounding estates still grow a significant share of India's coffee.
A Chikmagalūr map poster captures a town shaped by its terrain: the tight lanes of the centre, the main roads curving up into the hills, and the looser, winding network of plantation tracks at the edges. In black and white the slopes become a calm background of open space, and the map reads as a portrait of a coffee town in the Ghats.
The hills north of the town rise sharply, and the roads climbing toward Mullayanagiri and the old coffee estates wind in tight bends across the slopes.
The town centre is a dense knot of streets and markets on the valley floor, the clearest cluster on the poster before the roads spread out into the hills.
Around the town, narrow plantation roads twist through coffee and forest, creating a fine, irregular network that fills the edges of the map.
